A CD or Treasury ladder isn’t a way to chase the highest possible yield — it’s a way to build predictable income while keeping some of the cash accessible on a rolling schedule, instead of locking it all up at one rate for one term.

How Laddering Actually Works

Instead of putting all your money into a single CD or Treasury bill, a ladder splits it across several maturities. A simple Treasury bill ladder might divide $20,000 into four $5,000 bills maturing at 4, 13, 26, and 52 weeks. As each one matures, you either spend the income and principal or roll it into a new long-dated rung — so part of the ladder is always coming due, giving regular access to cash without breaking anything early.

The Real 2026 Rate Picture

The Federal Reserve held its target rate at 3.50%–3.75% through the first half of 2026 after cutting in late 2025, and the best CD rates available have been running just under 4% APY on longer terms. Longer-dated Treasuries have moved differently — the 30-year yield climbed above 5.1% at one point in 2026, its highest level since 2007 — a reminder that CD and Treasury yields don’t always move together even though both are considered “safe” income.

Why Rate Direction Makes Laddering More Useful, Not Less

Most forecasters expect CD rates to drift lower through the rest of 2026 as the Fed continues cutting. A ladder is specifically a hedge against that kind of uncertainty: locking everything into one long CD now guesses that today’s rate is close to the best available; laddering spreads that bet across multiple maturities so no single rate decision determines the whole income stream.

Where This Fits an Income Plan

CD and Treasury income is the lowest-risk, most predictable end of an income-building spectrum that also includes REITs and peer-to-peer lending further out on the risk curve. Pairing a ladder with a high-yield savings account for the truly liquid portion is a common way to balance yield against flexibility.
