A digital product — a course, an ebook, a template pack — is one of the few income streams that can be built once and sold indefinitely without a linear tradeoff between hours worked and income earned. That’s also exactly why it’s more front-loaded and more competitive than it looks.
The Real Platform Economics
Where a course actually sells determines what it actually nets. Teachable runs $39–$499/month with a 5% transaction fee on its entry Basic plan; Kajabi runs $89–$399/month but charges 0% in transaction fees; Podia runs $39–$199/month with a 5% fee on its Starter tier; Thinkific’s $49/month Basic plan includes unlimited courses. A lower-priced plan with a per-sale fee can cost more at real volume than a pricier plan with none — the math needs to run against an actual expected sales number, not the sticker price alone.
Ebooks and Templates Are a Different Product, Not a Smaller Course
A course sells transformation and usually includes some access to the creator (community, Q&A, updates). An ebook or a template pack sells a finished artifact with no ongoing relationship expected — which means a much lower price point is normal, but so is a much lower cost to produce and a shorter sales page needed to convert a buyer.
The Real Market Is Real, But Crowded
The online course market is projected to surpass $200 billion by 2027, inside a broader creator economy expected to reach roughly $528 billion by 2030 — genuine growth, not a shrinking niche. But that same growth means most narrow topics already have established competitors; a digital product built purely on “no one else has covered this” is a shakier bet than one built on a creator’s own already-proven audience or expertise.
Where the Real Income Ramp Comes From
Unlike REITs or dividend income, a digital product’s income curve is almost entirely front-loaded with unpaid work: building the product, building an audience willing to buy it, and building the sales page and email sequence that actually converts that audience. The “passive” part only starts after that upfront investment is already made and proven to convert.
